Charger breaker sizes, power, and range per hour come from EnergySage's Level 2 charger table. Load method: NEC 220.82 optional calculation. Charger power is counted at the charger amps times 240 volts. Real-world range depends on your vehicle.
How this calculator works
The calculator runs the NEC 220.82 optional method on your home without the charger, then adds the charger as a fixed load at its amps times 240 volts. It compares the result with your service size and reports fits, tight, or does not fit. It also finds the largest charger on the standard 16 to 80 amp list that your service can carry.
Charger sizes and breaker pairings come from EnergySage's Level 2 table.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 100 amp panel handle an EV charger?
Sometimes. A small 16 to 24 amp charger may fit if the rest of the house is not heavy on electric heat and cooking. Many 100 amp homes need load management or a service upgrade for a larger charger.
What size breaker does a Level 2 charger need?
The breaker is sized above the charger's rated amps. A 32 amp charger uses a 40 amp breaker, a 40 amp charger uses a 50 amp breaker, and a 48 amp charger uses a 60 amp breaker.
Do I need a new panel to install an EV charger?
Only if the load calculation shows you are out of capacity or the panel has no open slot for the breaker. This calculator checks capacity. An electrician checks the physical panel.
