Why Won't My GFCI Outlet Reset, and How Do I Fix It?

GFCI outlets are built to trip at the slightest hint of a fault, which makes them excellent at protecting you and occasionally frustrating to reset. Most cases are a quick fix. One isn't.

A GFCI that won't reset is doing exactly what it's designed to do. The question is just which of a few causes is behind it. Work through the causes below in order; the first three solve most cases in well under half an hour, and a straightforward outlet swap is realistic even if you're not especially experienced.

Cut the power before you touch the terminals

Both the LINE and LOAD terminals on a GFCI can be live. Switch off the breaker, prove your tester works on a known live outlet, and confirm the outlet is dead before you touch any wire. Never work on a GFCI with the power on.

  • Why does one GFCI outlet affect others in the room?

    A single GFCI often protects several downstream outlets wired behind it. A fault at any of those downstream outlets can prevent the main GFCI from resetting.

  • How long do GFCI outlets last?

    Typically 10–15 years, though some fail sooner with heavy moisture exposure and others last 20–25 years with light use and regular testing.

  • Can I replace a GFCI outlet myself?

    Yes, if you're comfortable cutting power at the breaker and matching LINE/LOAD wiring correctly. If you're unsure, it's a quick, inexpensive job for an electrician.

  • Is it safe to just keep pressing the reset button?

    Press Reset once after unplugging everything. If it will not reset with nothing plugged in, or it trips again, stop. A GFCI that keeps tripping is usually detecting a real ground fault, and forcing it or resetting it repeatedly can expose you to shock. Leave it off and have an electrician look at it.

  • What does it mean if my GFCI resets but trips again right away?

    This usually points to an active ground fault or a specific device causing the trip, rather than a simple overload. Unplug everything and test one device at a time to isolate it.

  • Why does my GFCI outlet feel warm?

    Warmth or discoloration around an outlet is a sign of a genuine electrical problem, not something to keep resetting past. Stop using that outlet and have an electrician look at it.

  • Why does monthly GFCI testing matter?

    A GFCI's protective sensing circuitry can fail silently with age even while the outlet keeps supplying power normally as a plain outlet. That's exactly why it's worth pressing TEST and RESET every month. If it doesn't trip on TEST, it's not protecting you even though everything plugged into it still works, and it's worth replacing.

  • Does the GFCI need a ground wire?

    A GFCI can protect people on a two-wire circuit without a ground, but it must be labeled "No Equipment Ground" and cannot protect plug-in surge protectors the same way. If your outlet has no ground, ask an electrician what is allowed in your home.
