Horsepower and drive-type guidance follows Hunker. Installed cost of $300 to $900 is from the Fix or Hire opener repair-or-replace data, and $225 to $550 is from Angi. Check the opener maker's compatibility chart for your exact door.
How this calculator works
Horsepower is chosen from door size and weight: 1/3 HP suits a lightweight door up to 10 by 8 feet, 1/2 HP is the common size for an average double or heavier single door, 3/4 HP suits a wood or insulated double door up to 16 by 8 feet, and 1 HP or more is for doors wider than 16 feet or very heavy ones.
Drive type follows what matters to you. Belt and screw drives are quieter than chain, and chain is easier to repair. For double doors, chain or screw drive is recommended.
