Garage door weight calculator
Pick the size and material. You get a typical weight range, an insulation adjustment, and a safe way to think about springs and openers.
Typical weight ranges come from published garage door weight guides (EngineerFix and Detroit Door and Millwork): single steel about 85 to 150 lb, double steel about 150 to 225 lb, single wood often over 250 lb, double wood over 400 lb, single aluminum or fiberglass about 70 to 150 lb. Opener horsepower hints follow Hunker's guidance.
How this calculator works
The calculator looks up the published typical weight range for your door size and material. Polyurethane foam insulation adds 10 to 20 percent, so that range is stretched when you tick it. A rule-of-thumb opener size is then suggested from the weight class.
Weights are approximate. Springs must be matched to the exact weight of the actual door, which should be done by a professional.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a garage door weigh?
A single steel door is typically 85 to 150 pounds and a double steel door 150 to 225 pounds. Wood doors weigh much more, often over 250 pounds for a single and over 400 for a double.
Does insulation make a garage door heavier?
Yes. Polyurethane foam insulation typically adds 10 to 20 percent. Polystyrene panels add less.
Can I weigh my garage door myself?
It is not recommended. The door is balanced by springs under heavy tension, and weighing it can mean removing or disturbing them. A pro has the right equipment.
